At Cathay Pacific, we’ve been letting our passion fly for over 65 years.
Our airline was established in Hong Kong in 1946 by Roy Farrell and Sydney De Kantzow. The pair began with two DC3 aircraft, ‘Betsy’ and ‘Nikki’, and operated passenger flights to Manila, Bangkok, Singapore and Shanghai.
As we entered the jet era in 1962, the company enjoyed spectacular growth, and introduced the world’s first international services to Osaka, Fukuoka and Nagoya in Japan.
Between the 1970s and 1980s, we had expanded our international network to Europe and North America. The Cabin Crew duties were quite different back then. As there was no inflight entertainment or personal TVs, the Cabin Crew delighted passengers by distributing playing cards and cigarettes, along with meals and beverages.
By the mid-1990s, we had assembled a fleet of aircraft that was among the youngest in the world. Our unique 'brushwing' livery was unveiled and has since become the iconic centrepiece of our corporate identity.
In 1997, our first overseas Cabin Crew base was established in Vancouver. By 2010, the Cabin Crew population had reached 7,800; doubling in size in 10 years. Significant investments have been made in our fleet and operations to help transform Hong Kong into a world-leading global transportation hub. Today, we have firmly established ourselves as the world's best airline with our Cabin Crew team reaching to a population of 10,000 servicing more than 50 destinations around the world.
The first Cathay Pacific Cabin Crew uniform was the military inspired suit in navy blue. The navy style box hat with CPA logo, white gloves, and blue hues remained the key theme of Cathay's Cabin Crew uniform between 1946 and 1962. In 1962, our uniforms took a traditional turn to a lovely Cheong-sam skirt and white blouse. This was the first red Cathay Pacific uniform. The red theme has remained signature to Cathay Pacific since and has been transformed into different styles by popular designers over time.
